GlobalComix App now in Public Beta; SCADs of comic creators
The TfC Ramble is a weekly digest of content from the intersection of technology and comics.
Digital Comics
The GlobalComix app might just be the Comixology replacement we’ve been looking for. This is a beta product, but it is very polished already.
From Christopher Carter, CEO & Founder, GlobalComix :
“After a long development process, I’m happy to say that today we released the public beta version of the GlobalComix app in the iOS App Store (iPhone and iPad available now, Android version coming very soon), and we wanted to let everyone who signed up for access to the closed beta know.
Link to download from the App Store.
It’s a public beta, which means there are a few things still missing, but we’re eager to let folks in to try it out and provide some early feedback. We want it to be the best app in the world for reading comics!
Some of the highlights include
Improved discovery. Just open the app and scroll down to find curated and automated lists of content among our 40,000+ releases.
Advanced search and filters. We have a lot of ways to search, sort and filter, so you can find exactly the stuff you’re looking for.
Powerful reading experience. Single or double page, fit to width, or vertical scroll? Set up the reading experience the way you like it, and try our panel-to-panel reading mode (we’re still working on it!)
Track and organize. Add comics to your own library. Track what you’re reading, what you want to read later, and pick up where you left off.”

dReader
Thursday, I sat in on another very encouraging Discord demo from the team. The dReader app reminds me a lot of what I am seeing from the GlobalComix app, only with comic NFTs at its core.
Of particular interest to me was the mention of linking physical comics with their corresponding digital equivalents. You’d buy the comic at your local comic shop and “scan” to mint the equivalent NFT, making it theoretically possible to read the comic without it even leaving its collectible bag.
Just Charts
I believe it is important to know that creating a full-time career in comics is very difficult. It can help you plan your life from a realistic vantagepoint.
Let’s assume for a moment that working on a monthly floppy comic is a possible path to a living wage in comics. There are roughly 500 monthly comics coming out in the direct market and roughly 150 equivalents on Kickstarter (a little over 2000 successful campaigns divided by 12). That translates to 650 available, full-time jobs. But note that there were 656 graduates (over 5 years) from just one comics program in one country. That is a lot of competition.
If you are already making a living in comics, you are a rock star!
Writer Accountability
I continue to do research for my
just-in-caseDC pitch. As of today, I have Ra's al Ghul, Bruce Wayne (Batman), Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), Lex Luthor, Ted Kord (Blue Beetle), and Michael Holt (Mr. Terrific) all trapped together in one place. If anyone knows a reason why this couldn’t happen per current DC canon, please, please, please let me know before I get too many more words down!
Just for Fun
My new “play it loud in the car” song. Crank it to hear the instrumentation! 😂
I really like it too. You can easily set how you want to read pages, whether panel-to-panel, or whole pages, scrolling vertical or horizontal. Glamorella’s Daughter is there and looks super cool, if I can humble brag. :)
